Gaming mouse marketing pushes max DPI front and center, even though that number barely affects the real experience. Here’s what actually matters.
DPI: mostly a marketing number
Past 3200 DPI, nobody actually plays at that sensitivity — most competitive players sit between 400 and 1600 DPI. A mouse advertising 26,000 DPI isn’t more precise than one at 8,000: it’s just a bigger number on the box.
What actually matters: sensor and weight
The sensor type (optical, ideally, with a solid consistent polling rate) determines real-world precision far more than max DPI does. Weight is purely a matter of personal preference — but a mouse that’s too heavy tires out your wrist in long sessions, which hurts precision far more than a mediocre sensor does in the first few minutes.
In practice
- Aim for a well-regarded optical sensor (PixArt PAW3395 or equivalent) rather than a high max-DPI number
- Test the weight in store if you can: between 60g (ultra-light, competitive) and 90g (more stable, less fatiguing over long sessions)
- Modern wireless (dedicated 2.4GHz) no longer adds perceptible latency versus wired — don’t rule it out on principle
- Check the polling rate (1000Hz minimum; some models go up to 4000Hz with no real benefit for most players)
Verdict
Ignore the DPI printed on the box. Sensor, weight, and grip comfort matter infinitely more for actual in-game precision.
