DLSS, FSR, XeSS: which one to choose in 2026?
The three upscaling technologies aren't as unequal as they used to be. What actually sets them apart, beyond which brand made your GPU.

All three make the same promise — reconstruct a high-resolution image from a lighter render — but results diverge sharply depending on the scene.
What actually separates them
DLSS (Nvidia) remains the benchmark for sharpness and edge stability, thanks to a model trained on dedicated hardware (Tensor Cores). It only runs on RTX cards.
FSR (AMD) is purely software-based, so it works on any recent card — including Nvidia and Intel ones. The quality gap with DLSS has narrowed significantly since FSR 3, but shimmering on fine detail (foliage, fences) is still more noticeable.
XeSS (Intel) runs best on Intel Arc cards (dedicated hardware acceleration), but remains usable everywhere in software mode — with a quality trade-off in that mode.
The real deciding factor
It's not the brand of the tech that decides — it's the game. Some titles implement FSR poorly (ghosting on fast-moving objects) while DLSS is clean on the same title, and vice versa. Test both when a game offers them rather than trusting a general reputation.
In practice
- Nvidia RTX card: favor DLSS when available.
- AMD or older-generation card: FSR is your only option, and it's plenty good at 1440p/4K.
- Intel Arc card: XeSS in hardware mode is surprisingly competitive.
Verdict
None of the three is objectively "the best" in absolute terms — the right pick depends mostly on your card and the game. DLSS keeps a slight edge in image stability, FSR wins on universal availability.
