Setting up your gaming monitor for esports: Hz, response time, calibration
A poorly configured 240Hz monitor can behave like a 144Hz one. The settings to check before blaming the hardware.

A high-end monitor that's poorly configured often delivers no real advantage over a more modest model set up correctly. Here's what matters, in order.
1. The actual refresh rate
Windows sometimes drops back to 60Hz after an update or a cable swap. Check Display Settings → Refresh Rate before touching anything else — it's the most common mistake, and the easiest to fix.
2. Overdrive: not too low, not too high
Overdrive reduces motion blur, but an overly aggressive setting creates inverse ghosting (reversed trails, halos). "Medium" is almost always the right compromise — "extreme" degrades image quality on most panels.
3. VRR (G-Sync/FreeSync) on, but paired with a sensible FPS cap
VRR eliminates tearing without classic V-Sync's added latency — as long as you stay under the monitor's max refresh rate. Cap your FPS 3 frames below that max (e.g. 237 on a 240Hz panel) to stay in the VRR range at all times.
4. Color calibration doesn't affect responsiveness
Contrary to popular belief, adjusting color balance or gamma has zero impact on input lag. Don't sacrifice visual comfort thinking it'll buy you reactivity.
