Optimizing Windows for gaming: the settings that actually matter
Most "boost your FPS" guides tweak cosmetic settings. Here are the five that have a measurable impact, and the ones you can skip.

Most "FPS optimization" guides recycle the same tips with no real impact. Here's what actually matters, measured in-game.
What actually moves the needle
- Best Performance power mode. Windows still throttles mobile CPUs by default, even on AC power. On a gaming laptop, the gap can exceed 10% FPS.
- Game Mode on, but not a permanent Game Bar overlay. Game Mode helps prioritize resources; a background overlay running constantly shaves a few FPS on tight builds.
- Up-to-date GPU drivers — but not necessarily the day-one release. "Game Ready" drivers shipped right before a major patch often carry stability bugs — waiting a week after a big AAA launch avoids frequent regressions.
- Disable fullscreen optimizations on games that run poorly in borderless: it sometimes adds unnecessary input lag on games with native exclusive fullscreen support.
- Check your SSD's power management mode (Device Manager → Power Management): some laptops put the SSD into aggressive sleep, causing in-game micro-stutters.
What (almost) doesn't matter
- Disabling Windows Defender: negligible FPS impact on modern hardware, real security risk in exchange.
- "Cleaning the registry": no measurable impact on gaming performance.
- Disabling every system notification: cosmetic, no FPS gain.
