Retro game emulation long faced a dilemma: keep the original low-resolution aesthetic, or sacrifice it with generic filters that distort the pixel art. AI upscaling changes that equation.

Models trained specifically per console generation

Unlike a simple sharpening filter, these models learn the specific patterns of a given hardware generation — PS1 textures and Nintendo 64 textures don’t upscale well the same way.

The best tools remain built by emulation communities rather than license holders themselves, limiting official integration despite obvious player demand.

Verdict

An impressive, already mature technique that remains largely confined to unofficial community projects.
