Final Fantasy Resonance, Square Enix’s new HD-2D turn-based RPG, launched on October 22, 2026, on consoles and PC. Unlike the studio’s previous HD-2D games (Octopath Traveler, Live A Live, Dragon Quest III HD-2D), this one tells a completely original story rather than remaking an existing one.
An HD-2D RPG that isn’t a remake
Developed by Square Enix’s Creative Studio 5 — the Octopath Traveler team, led by executive producer Tomoya Asano — with co-development from LANCARSE, Final Fantasy Resonance is the franchise’s first HD-2D turn-based RPG built around a brand-new story. The game is directed by Hiroto Furuya and produced by Keisuke Nakashima. It picks up and expands the first narrative arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius into a full, classic JRPG, in the same turn-based vein games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 have recently brought back into the spotlight.
Available almost everywhere, except Game Pass
The game launched on October 22, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (Steam and Microsoft Store), with confirmed Steam Deck and Steam Machine compatibility. Some Steam listings show October 23, likely due to regional unlock time zones rather than an actual delay.
Three editions are available:
- Standard: $49.99
- Digital Deluxe: $59.99 (cosmetic and item bonuses)
- Collector’s Edition: $209.99 (a box containing the physical Standard Edition, a Digital Deluxe upgrade code, an artbook, the soundtrack, an acrylic block set, and a Final Fantasy Trading Card Game promo card)
The game is not available on Xbox Game Pass at launch. By contrast, Gears of War: E-Day, released earlier the same month, is available day one on the service.
A demo that’s actually worth playing
A free demo covering the first chapter has been available since September 3, 2026, and demo progress carries over directly into the full game on purchase — a concrete way to judge the combat system before paying for an edition.
No critic verdict yet
No Metacritic score or significant reviews had been published as of launch. It’s too early to say whether Resonance lives up to the Final Fantasy name.
A week later, on October 29, it’s the action RPG Phantom Blade Zero’s turn to launch — a packed calendar for RPG fans this late October 2026.
Our take
There’s no judging this game on promise alone yet. The real smart move here is the free Chapter 1 demo: it lets you test the combat system yourself before committing to a $209.99 Collector’s Edition.
