NVMe SSD Gen4 vs Gen5: which one for gaming in 2026?

What speed actually changes
Most game engines don't saturate a Gen4 drive's bandwidth — the real bottleneck sits elsewhere (CPU decompression, asset streaming). On the same title, the load-time gap between Gen4 and Gen5 rarely exceeds a second or two.
The real problem: heat
Gen5 SSDs run noticeably hotter than Gen4 under sustained load, to the point of needing a heatsink as standard — sometimes even active cooling on the fastest models. Without serious cooling, the controller throttles and a Gen5 drive can end up slower than a good Gen4 one during long sessions.

- For gaming: a 2TB Gen4 NVMe SSD remains the best performance-per-dollar pick. Prioritize capacity (100-150GB per AAA title) over raw speed.
- For Gen5: it earns its keep mainly in content creation (8K video editing, large file transfers), not gaming alone.

- You do video editing or heavy content creation
- Your motherboard already has a Gen5 slot
- You're planning serious cooling (active heatsink)
Gen4 is enough if
- You're mainly gaming, no creation workload
- You want to avoid throttling/overheating
- Budget matters more than 1-2 seconds of load time
