The RTX 5080 has an advertised TDP of 320W, but figuring out the power supply you actually need doesn’t stop at that number — transient power spikes are what really cause trouble.

The real problem: spikes, not the average

Modern GPUs produce transient power spikes that can exceed their advertised TDP by 30-40% for a few milliseconds. A PSU sized right at the average can trip a safety protection and cause an abrupt shutdown during these spikes, even if average consumption stays well within spec.

The full math for an RTX 5080 build

Counting a high-end CPU (150-200W at full load), the GPU (320W TDP, up to 450W in transient spikes), and the rest of the system (storage, fans, RGB — roughly 80-100W), total peak draw can hit 650-700W on a beefy build.
