Comparison: Slay the Spire 2 in Early Access, a sequel unafraid to grow up

MegaCrit adds co-op multiplayer to its cult deckbuilding roguelike formula. In Early Access since March 2026, the foundation is already solid despite content still being incomplete.

A sequel to an instant deckbuilding classic is never a safe bet. MegaCrit pulls it off by adding something nobody really asked for — up to four-player co-op — without ever betraying the original formula.

Co-op genuinely changes the game

Building your deck around a teammate’s adds a layer of tactical thinking the series has never had before, and the new characters slot well into the overall balance. The base game’s foundations — card synergies, relics, replayability — remain just as addictive.

An Early Access that owns it

The game is still evolving: some parts of the solo content feel less polished than co-op, and several cards’ balance still shifts from patch to patch. Nothing alarming for Early Access, but worth keeping in mind before diving in fully.

Verdict

Already one of the year’s best Early Access releases for fans of the first game — just remember it’s still, by design, a work in progress on several fronts.
