RAM prices are exploding: why your next gaming PC is about to cost more

If you were planning to build or upgrade a gaming PC in the coming months, brace for sticker shock. DDR5 memory kits are going through their worst price spike since the standard launched: a 32GB kit that traded around $90 in the summer of 2025 now sells for $375 to $560 based on the most recent price trackers.

Why RAM suddenly got so expensive

The cause has nothing to do with gaming — it’s explosive AI memory demand soaking up global production capacity. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, which together make nearly all the world’s DRAM, have shifted production lines away from consumer DDR5 toward HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) for Nvidia and other AI chipmakers’ data-center chips.

The result: less standard DDR5 being made, unchanged PC demand, and prices spiraling. According to Team Group’s general manager, one of the leading memory makers, the crisis has only just started and could get worse — DRAM and NAND prices have already doubled in a single month this year.

What this actually means for a gaming PC

• 16GB is now the bare floor, not a recommendation — enough for desktop use and most competitive titles, but with no headroom.
• 32GB remains the sweet spot for gaming, content creation, and heavy multitasking — just at a noticeably higher price than a year ago.
• No return to normal is expected before 2027, per industry analysts, as manufacturers rebalance capacity between AI and the consumer market.

Our advice if you have to buy now

If a RAM purchase can’t wait, aim for the capacity you actually need rather than overbuying out of caution — every extra GB now costs proportionally more than before the crisis. If your current build is holding up fine, this probably isn’t the moment for a comfort RAM upgrade — a better price window is more likely to open in 2027 than before the end of this year.
