Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto V has crossed 170 million copies sold, a figure that very likely makes it the best-selling video game of all time outside mobile.

Three successive ports that extended its lifespan

Originally released on PS3 and Xbox 360, then reissued on PS4/Xbox One and PS5/Xbox Series, the game benefited from a porting strategy that spread its sales out considerably over time.

GTA Online, the real longevity engine

Beyond base-game sales, it’s the online mode, continuously updated since 2013, that kept an active enough player base to justify each new port.

A record that’s a reminder of just how high the bar sits for GTA 6, due this November.
